This Reith Lecture is truly amazing- for us all to hear, and to use to help ourselves and others, as we all approach this inevitable fact of life, however long we stay vibrantly alive- dying and death.
Dr Atul Gawande, surgeon and writer, suggests that we have to learn to cope with limits, ‘the problem of hubris’—‘we have no greater unfixables than ageing and death’ ..He suggests that doctors ask, and individuals, ask, a series of simple but penetrating questions-
‘what is your understanding of where you are with your illness?’ ‘What are your fears and worries?’ ‘’What are your goals?’
It is a moving lecture- do listen to it and share with others…it talks about among other things ‘chemo costs’ and he means these costs to the individual, not the public purse...….’If this were a drug it would be a multimillion pound drug’—this is ’about HAVING CONVERSATIONS'
