San Francisco Bay Area Vegetarian and Vegan Restaurants

To discover the best vegetarian and vegan restaurants in the Bay Area, I asked my large exercise class full of savvy Marin ladies.

'Vivian' said she knew this scene inside and out -- she's a vegetarian who used to be a vegan and she doesn't cook so she eats out frequently.  A couple of others who knew her (as I did not) said, "Oh you hit pay dirt!  She really knows her stuff!"  She wrote down the names of seven restaurants and said they were all excellent (she had been to one the day before and was going to another that night). I looked up the addresses and phone numbers to complete the list.

The only one I've experienced myself is Greens, which I have categorized as "fine dining $" because it is rather pricey.  The one called Millennium has the same designation.  (There may be others among those listed that are pricey also, I just don't know.)  Greens is in a lovely location on the water and it's fun. It opened in 1979 as part of the SF Zen Center. It was one of the first vegetarian restaurants in the Bay Area.

Another woman in my class told me about Miyoko Schinner, who has written books appeared on TV and in the Huffington Post, and is in the process of opening a vegan cheese factory in Fairfax (Marin).  Info about her follows the restaurant list.

A marvelous source of delicious organic foods which can be purchased in the area is Lydia’s Organics. (Lydia used to treat us --at a different exercise class-- with scrumptious kale shakes.) Again her info is at the end of the restaurant listings and it includes the organic markets where you can find her products.

Miyoko Schinner was highly recommended by another gal. Evidently Schinner is about to open a vegan cheese factory in Fairfax (Marin). Below are various sites about her work:
